Hi everyone who still checks this, (although I’m not sure why you would have recently!)
The distinct lack of activity of recent months is due partly to the re-calibrating of this website. Roger has been hard at work re-jigging the whole site, and it should be pretty sweet when it’s all done. Until then, it seems [...]

I know this is probably abusing the whole blog ethic. But here’s a video of David Bazan playing songs off his album that gets released today, ‘Curse Your Branches’. Enjoy.

Amusing ourselves to death: was Orwell or Huxley right?

Justin Taylor, at Between Two Worlds, posted a link to this cartoon/comic by Stuart McMillen. McMillen drew this in response to a book called Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman.
The book propounds that Aldous Huxley, in his novel Brave New World, was actually right in his predictions. He contrasts Huxley’s thought with that of George [...]

Humble Music Critique: “That sucks!” or “Hmmm…I’ll have to think about it.”

Bob Kauflin, at NEXT, has written a cool article on why the way we critique music is important. This is aimed particularly at Christians, but the principles are sound whoever you might be. The article is titled “I Hate That Song“. Read it! It’s good!
Kauflin points out some interesting issues, which I can certainly relate [...]

Crossway Bibles has released a new study bible, in the English Standard Version translation. I’d been considering getting a new bible for some time, and heard through some of my favourite preachers and writers that the new ESV one would be good. I checked it out, bought one, and it is excellent.
For one, there are excellent commentary/study notes. [...]

Review of ‘Surprised by Hope’ by N. T. Wright

From the blurb:
For years Christians have been asking “If you died tonight, do you know where you would go?” It turns out many believers have been giving the wrong answer. It is not heaven.
For those of you unfamiliar with N. T. Wright, he is the coolest old, bald Anglican since C. S. Lewis. In fact [...]

(Not really) A review of “Velvet Elvis” by Rob Bell

Author, Simon.

I have been hearing about Rob Bell’s Velvet Elvis since it was published. Some reactions are positive (some very positive) and others suggest it borders on heresy. Quite a spread of opinion. There are some people I really respect who have some big issues with Bell and what he says and believes. I had formed [...]

The impact of David Bazan

To say that David Bazan has been somewhat of a spiritual guide for me, would not be drawing a very long bow. Since first listening to Winners Never Quit in 2003, I have felt very connected, not only to the music, but also with a certain underlying outlook on life. Bazan doesn’t seem afraid to [...]
